1. in free time people do sin and waste it. it is upon us to use it in learning our deen.
allah have angels that look around to find the gathering of knowledge, find people that remember allah, when they find so, they call on each others and say, we found what we were looking for.
one came with sincerity, keep in mind angels are around you, not come with pride and riyah.
ppl do not gather in a gathering, except that when they stand up, allah forgiven them for your sins, and replace your bad deeds with good deeds. (ameen). what doese this athar create in him, it create him to seek this ilm of deen and attend this gathering of knowledge.
some people when have free time go to do haram stuffs, but believer get niyamah for attending the gathering of knowledge. on the jumu'ah prayer, dua are accepted.
today, we will discuss - importance of seeking knowledge.
every ayah allah talked about knowledge, and prophet, is the islamic knowledge, and it is a great subject.
1. how allah praises the people of knowledge in His book, and raises their status, and it is by knowledge. bearing witness to the oneness of allah, by people of ilm along with allah and angels.
this shows greatness of knowledge and ppl of knowledge, if anyone was more prefered, then allah would have mentioned it bearing witness to His oneness.
if you want someone to witness your wedding, you take the one you trust and someone close and dear to you.
so when allah informed of His oneness, He first said, He beared witness, and then angels - they never disobey allah - purest from amongst the creation, and then allah mentioned the scholars - not the mankind but specific group of them, they are the purest of mankind b/c they carry knowledge.
2. allah raises those who believe amongst you and those who have knowledge.
put them on a lebel that other people are not on. people of knowledge are from amongst those who believe, why allah mentioned them specifically, allah did so that he raises them higher than others.
say, is the one who know, like the one who doesn't know.
the person who has the knowledge of deen, is higher than the one who doesn't have. it is the case with the dog. allah said in qur'an, we are allowed to eat the meat, and hunt, dog that you have taught,
even a dog that has knowledge is higher in rank than the one who doesn't have knowledge,
if this is the case with dog, imagine the state with the individual.
3. verily the one that fear allah the most are the scholars. why b/c they know allah the most. once you have ilm, you know how to worship and call to HIm, call on him, this ilm push him to fear allah.
when doesn't know allah, they fall on sins.
when one knows allah hears and sees, then they will do what allah loves. and that allah is severe in punishment,
if you don't know, how can you fear one whom you do not know.
if one finds sinning and weak on faith and doubtful, then one is to learn about allah.
say we believe in allah and be upright.
those who say our lord is Allah and than stay upright.
mean they know allah and so, they act and fear allah more.
everything in islam that you want to do of worship, that should be based on knowledge, everything you do seeking reward from allah. allah said: Know, there is none worthy of worship, and then seek forgiveness of your sins.
imam bukhare said, allah begun with ilm before speech actions.
not desire or feelings or emotions, but KNOWLEDGE, that's why allah sent prophets and messengers.
that's why allah said: say, if you love allah, FOLLOW ME, allah will love you and forgive you your sins.
so it means, if you want to get pleasure of allah, it must be based on knowledge.
knowledge is from sunnah and way of prophet. we want to be like prophet and his way, in order to be such we must seek ilm.
allah said: say, this is my way, i call to allah upon baseerah - sure ilm - i and WHOSOEVER follows me.
so no doubt, that ilm is very important and foundation of islam, b/c once we come into islam, we must pray, hajj and so on, we cannot do it, without ilm.
so it is upon us all, old or new muslim, we must seek knowledge.
from sunnah:
1. whoever allah wants good for, allah gives him fiqh - understanding of deen
allah gives wealth to whoever he wants but He gives fiqh of deen to whom He wants good for.
opposite is for opposite, whoever allah does not want good for, does not give him fiqh of deen.
upon you now, after knowing this hadith, to seek ilm of deen, seeking help and tawpiq from allah, and have trust in allah while seeking knowledge.
2. whoever seeks a path, allah will make his path to jannah easy.
two ways: whoever travels, - get in car, with niyah to attend a islamic lecture/class, this person made his path to jannah, by actually getting into car, travel to seek ilm ad-deen
or you buy books, tapes, and so on, is way to seek knowledge by which he is making his path to jannah easy.
bookstores closes of islam, b/c no one buys them.
- and verily the angels lowers their wings for the student of ilm out of pleasure for what he is doing, so you know the angels do not disobey allah, and they do whatever allah orders them.
reading books, travel, and so on way of seeking ilm, not only travel, but reading books, and listen to tapes included too.
- verily the scholars, everything in the heaven and the earth, seeks forgiveness for them, even the fish in the bottom of the ocean,
we hope someone at least ask forgiveness for us, at least our wife and children but for scholars, everything seeks forgiveness for them, even the fish. so when one hears it, they say, how can i be from amongst these people?
- the greatness of scholar compare to worshipper, is like moon compare to stars. in the night, how great is the moon in the sky at night, it lights everything, and everything is below it. this is how scholar's greatness compare to others.
b/c full moon shines on everything, that's why prophet made this similitude, unlike stars. like our scholars - their books are everywhere. like moon, as it shines on everything, scholars ilm reaches everywhere,
worshiper is home, like star, has light around it - ilm.
- verily the scholars are those who inherited from prophet, prophet didn't leave behind wealth, but left behind ilm. whoever great holds of ilm, took hold of ilm, took a great deal of good. these are the scholars, they are the ones who inherited the prophets,
when you die, who inherite from you, your closer relatives, who takes from prophet, scholars, this means they are the closest one to prophet. (subhan -allah). the one took on themselves to call to allah, enjoin good and forbid evil.
so when one reads sahih bukhare and muslim, they should know they took on themselves the role of prophets.
so no more prophets, so their role is taken by ppl of ilm, so when one knows this, they strive to be scholar or be next to them. knowing they are the ones who took the role of the prophets.
greatness of the scholar, over the worshipper, in this issue, there is another hadith: hadith of the man who killed 99 people, who was seeking to forgivenss, wanted to meet one who could tell him about forgiveness, so ignorant worshipper, - he said no forgiveness for this man, so killed him , now 100, then was guided to scholar, - so asked him, scholar said, what will stop you from forgivenss, and he gives even more, and said, leave your evil land and guide him to good land. b/c that's how the scholar, they guide to good, advice and give and help more than one ask.
you have to have knowledge and wisdom, scholars have this and that's how they guide people like in the above hadith shows.
- best of you is the one who learns the qur'an and teaches it. and we want to be best, so are we talking about best of indian, no, best of sons of adam, who learns qur'an and teaches it. (sub-han-allah).
- best of you in your islam is the one who has good manner if he seeks knowledge. now ppl says you must have good adab but if he is ignorant, so what's the point of good adab. so read the full hadith.
so these are few verses and hadith, and after hearing them one is motivated to seek knowledge and be amongst the people of knowledge, you don't have to quit job and be cased in house to seek knowledge.
alhamdulillah, we still have scholar alive. it is a stragety, that there are scholar alive and one is not able to benefit from them. ... still scholar on earth, so benefit from them. b/c in hadith, prophet said, allah will take away knowledge by the death of the scholar. allah won't take ilm by taking away from the heart but by the death of scholar, slowly, until no more scholar and people take ignorant as leader and they misguide them.
just b/c books are there that does not you will understand them correctly, we need scholars to explain them. scholar like example of a group of people, came near vally, and then night came, no one has light, they stock in vally, that is mountain arounded it, moon up but still light may not come by your way, so a person come from behind with light and guides them through vally, he is the SCHOLAR.

Q&A: allah brighten the face of one who hears ilm and then convey, it is from seeking ilm too, also prophet said, a person carries a hadith but doesn't understand it, one he conveys to, understand it and it benefits him, it shows importance of being with scholar, memorizing does not mean one understand hadith.
scholar memoizes and understands, conbine both.
some people are just with memorize, don't want to understand.
- sit together with books of scholar and tapes, and study together. and then if you don't understand something, then call up scholar or student of ilm, to explain. sit at home and do there, you have to make your environment an islamic environment, you get people like you and make a group study and keep in touch from anywhere and study.
and if you do that, allah will make it easier and easier to seek knowledge.
you have to be consistance, you don't just do and then give up, you condition yourself, then you won't give up. salaf said, if the king knew sweetness of ilm, they will fight us for it.
shaykh muqbil said, when i open to read shahih bukhare and muslim, i forget about all problems of the world.
- you learn arabic, and when you do so, you cut of people who translators, information in arabic is more than in english. if one is serious about seeking ilm, you must learn arabic, - you must always look for arabic teacher and qur'an teacher, everywhere. doesn't mean you will take aqeedah from them but arabic and recitation of qur'an.
if you are consistant, allah will open up the doors, allah said, whoever strives in our cause, we will guide them, you don't break up.
- giving a specific day to women to teach, imam giving them, prophet gave women a day to teach them. it is highly recommanded that they should attend classes as men do staying behind a cover.
